Conserving water to build resilient farming communities

CottonGuru helps farming communities conserve water through practical, low-cost interventions that improve on-farm water efficiency, restore groundwater and increase crop resilience.

CottonGuru helps farming communities conserve water through practical, low-cost interventions that improve on-farm water efficiency, restore groundwater and increase crop resilience.

Why it matters

Cotton is water-intensive, and smallholder farmers face rising rainfall variability and groundwater stress. Water conservation reduces crop risk, lowers input costs, improves yields under drought, and supports long-term farm productivity and community wellbeing.

What we do

  • Promote farmer-friendly water-saving practices such as drip irrigation, mulching, and proper irrigation scheduling.
  • Implement soil-based solutions: compost, mulches and biochar to increase the soil’s water-holding capacity.
  • Build and rehabilitate community water infrastructure: farm ponds, check dams, recharge pits and contour bunds.
  • Train farmers on water budgeting, crop calendars and low-water agronomy.
  • Monitor water use and outcomes using simple field measurements and farmer logs to track impact.

CSR • Water Conservation

Strengthening water security through efficient, community-led solutions

How it works

  1. Assessment: Map water sources, irrigation methods and seasonal needs with farmers.
  2. Design: Recommend a mix of on-farm and landscape measures such as micro-irrigation, ponds and recharge structures.
  3. Implementation: Install systems with local labour, teach maintenance and demonstrate techniques on plots.
  4. Capacity building: Train farmer groups on irrigation management, water accounting and preventive maintenance.
  5. Monitor & scale: Track groundwater levels, soil moisture and crop responses; refine and expand successful measures.

Typical interventions

  • Micro-irrigation (drip & micro-sprinkler): Targets water directly to roots, reducing evaporative losses.
  • Soil health & mulching: Improves infiltration and moisture retention, lowering irrigation frequency.
  • On-farm storage (farm ponds): Captures monsoon runoff for dry-season irrigation and groundwater recharge.
  • Recharge structures: Check dams, percolation pits and contour bunds to enhance recharge.
  • Irrigation scheduling & crop planning: Aligns water application with crop needs to avoid waste.

Benefits

  • Lower water and energy costs for farmers.
  • Improved yields and crop stability during dry spells.
  • Increased groundwater recharge and community water security.
  • Co-benefits for soil health, biodiversity and climate resilience.

Impact metrics we track

  • Volume of water saved per hectare (baseline vs project).
  • Reduction in irrigation frequency and fuel or energy use.
  • Change in groundwater table or recharge indicators.
  • Crop yield and income changes.
  • Number of farmer groups adopting micro-irrigation and soil-health measures.

Why CottonGuru
